100W vs. 45W Mini Car Charger: Why Size Matters More Than Wattage!

If you’ve ever bought a high-powered car charger only to realize it doesn't physically fit into your car's cigarette lighter socket, you're not alone! I recently put two chargers head-to-head: a high-output 100W Car Charger and a compact 45W Mini Car Charger.

Here is what I discovered about speed, fitment, and why a few millimeters can make or break your setup.

1. Speed & Daily Performance

When it comes to powering up my Samsung Galaxy A34 phone, both chargers perform flawlessly. Paired with a 60W USB-C to USB-C cable, both the 100W and 45W models trigger fast charging on the A34 without any issues. For everyday smartphone top-ups, both get the job done smoothly.

2. The Size Trap: 2.15 cm vs. 2.04 cm

This is where things get interesting and where many buyers get caught off guard:

●45W Mini Car Charger: Features a slim 2.04 cm barrel diameter.
●100W Car Charger: Features a chunkier 2.15 cm barrel diameter.

That tiny 1.1 mm difference in thickness completely changes compatibility!

2.0 cm car charger is the one used in HRV 2015. However, it is does not give super fast charging in my phone.

3. The Honda Socket Test (HR-V vs. CR-V)

When testing both chargers across different vehicles, the clearance limitations became immediately obvious:

●2015 Honda HR-V & 2022 Honda CR-V of my customer: The 45W Mini Charger slides in smoothly and works perfectly. However, the 100W Charger is simply too wide (2.15 cm) to fit into the cigarette lighter sockets of either Honda model. If you drive these vehicles, the extra bulk on the 100W model is a dealbreaker.
●My Primary Car: Fortunately, the socket in my main daily car has a slightly wider opening that accommodates the 100W beast.

The Verdict So Far

Having the 100W charger in my main car is a huge win for future-proofing my setup. Especially for high-draw devices. My next step will be testing whether it can supply enough power to charge my laptop on the go!

Quick Tip Before You Buy: Before upgrading to a heavy-duty 100W+ car charger, double-check your car's socket dimensions. I suggest to use vernier caliper for precision measurement. If you drive a Honda HR-V or CR-V (or prefer a flush, low-profile fit), sticking to a slim 45W mini charger around 2.0 cm wide will save you a lot of headache!
