The Saga of a Phone Battery Replacement (And Why Doing Your Own Diagnostics Matters!)

Let’s be honest. Dealing with phone repairs is always an adventure. If you’ve ever had to replace a smartphone battery, you know it’s rarely a quick in-and-out trip. Case in point, here is my recent wild ride getting a battery replaced, complete with unexpected technician warnings, hardware hiccups, and why doing your own testing is always the safest bet.

The Timeline of a Repair Rollercoaster:
  • 15 October 2026: Sent my phone to the repair shop for a fresh battery.
  • 16 October 2026 (9:00 PM): Got a WhatsApp message stating the phone was ready for collection.
  • 19 October 2026 (Morning): Picked up the phone after the battery replacement.
  • 19 October 2026 (Evening): Had to send it right back! The battery refused to charge up, sitting stuck at 1% despite being plugged into the charger for over 7 hours.
  • 21 October 2026 (Noon): Went to collect the phone again after the technician insisted I needed to manually back up all my data. Their solution to the charging issue was to attempt a full software update, warning me that all my data would be wiped. And worse, there was a risk the phone might not turn on at all!
  • 21 October 2026 (12:00 PM – 3:00 PM): Spent the afternoon safely backing up all my data. Once everything was secured, I decided to run the firmware update myself at 3:00 PM.

Updating firmware in progress
  • 22 October 2026 (Subuh Morning): Woke up to a new set of problems. The torchlight and camera flash stopped functioning entirely, and the battery was still struggling to charge up.
  • 27 October 2026 (Morning): Headed back to the repair shop. The battery was still stuck at 1% after another 7-hour charging attempt. I waited while the technician opened up the phone to inspect the physical flex cable and battery connector. Turns out it was a hardware connectivity issue all along! Once re-seated properly, the torchlight/flash instantly started working, and the battery jumped to 74% by 10:08 AM.
The technician asked me to drop a WhatsApp if the charging stalled again. Fortunately, after bringing it home, the battery finally performed like normal; lasting until 10:13 PM at 20% before I plugged it in. What a journey!
