🎶 A Song, A Dog, and a Memory That Stuck

This morning of 9 July 2025, while taking a shower, a song suddenly popped into my head. Not just any song. But that song my youngest brother used to sing out loud in the most unexpected moment. Which is Who Let the Dogs Out, song by Baha Men, year 2000 [1].

I remember it so clearly. I had just picked up our 8th brother from primary school and was riding the motorcycle home, with my youngest brother (9th) sitting in front of me. We passed a house with a dog out front. And out of nowhere, he belted the song at the top of his lungs. I can’t remember exactly what lyric triggered him, but it was loud, enthusiastic… and terribly timed (or some might say accurate).

There I was, riding, internally panicking, hoping the dog wouldn’t chase us down the road. Meanwhile, he was happily crooning without a care in the world. Judging from the year the song was released, year 2000. My little brother must have been around 3 years old then. Too small for school, but already a performer in his own right!

It’s funny how songs carry memories with them. It was like little bookmarks in time.

Remember this song while updating entry on song Trauma by Ayumi Hamasaki. Where this song is used in Japan series Hana Yori Dango [1].

A Japanese live-action series Hana Yori Dango aired from 2005 to 2007 (and was followed by a 2008 film) [2,3].

The 45 second download of the ballad version of "Flavor Of Life" was released as a ring tone on January 6, 2007 on Chaku-Uta. The song debuted at number 14 the Chaku-Uta ring tone download chart, a great feat for one of the largest download stores in Japan. For reference, the main theme song from Hana Yori Dango 2, Arashi's "Love So Sweet", debuted at number 7 [4, 5].

Found this song finally last 8 October 2022. It was played in the radio that time. I manage to take recording of it. Before proceed to search for details on the song. This song always played as theme song in Running Man, Korean variety show. Especially when one of the cast, Kim Jong Kook started his gangster move.

Just happen to know the singer just passed away. Condolence on the loss of a talented singer.

Somehow this song just represents the current me. It is just becoming harder to do all things by myself despite I am able to do it. As my capability does feel much more limited after the car accident last 26 August 2022 [1]. But still, I have to push myself forward, with work and etc. And it's starting to drive me crazily annoyed. Plus with all questions and accusations that assume I am driving mad fast till accident. Makes me regret surviving the accident. But I have to be strong for my precious baby Furball. As she needs me to tend after her. She is the only thing that keeps me alive and strong after the accident [2]. As if I die during the accident, only need to spend less than RM 1,000 to bury my corpse.

This is written while listening to the song Bole Chudiyan from Hindustan or Bollywood movie Khabi Khushi Khabi Gham. I just loves the song arrangement and instruments used. They complement each others well.
